Contact Author How to Dress Like a Baby for Halloween
An adult baby costume can be loads of fun! You can buy a complete costume ready-made (like the one in the picture) or you can make your own with our suggestions from bonnet to booties. You’ll be the hit of your favorite Halloween party!
We give you lots of ideas here about how to dress up as a baby, as well as how to act in order to really pull off the transformation. Rather buy a ready-to-wear costume? We’ve got you covered there, too, in case you’re in a hurry. Don’t miss the accessories to make your “look” complete!
We’ll also let you in on our secret to a prize-winning baby costume. Hint: It’s something you already own. Trust us – this secret comes from personal experience.
Crawl on down the page and have fun learning how to transform yourself into the cutest (and biggest) toddler you and your Halloween party-going friends have ever seen!
Start with Nice, Soft Baby Skin
Otherwise known as long underwear. You may already have a pair in your dresser drawer. Or try the local dollar store and pick up a cheap pair.
If you’re really feeling creative, buy “long johns” a little bit large and stuff them with cotton batting here and there for some well-placed “baby fat,” which will help disguise your shape and, therefore, your identity. Or buy your regular size and let them do double duty in cold weather. This is also a great idea if you’ll be out and about on a chilly night. (Trick or treat!)
Baby Costume Accessories Checklist
Long underwear with cotton batting “baby fat.”
An adult-sized diaper with a huge safety pin in front.
Or wear ruffly baby bloomers.
A big pacifier to help hide your face,
or substitute a sippie cup or extra-large baby bottle.
A large bib.
A baby blanket for snuggling.
A baby bonnet with a big rim for hiding your baby face.
Simple white tennis shoes, knitted “booties,”
or cute Mary Jane style shoes.
Add One Extra-Large Diaper With Pin
You could fashion your own costume diaper, but the huge pin really makes a difference!
If you have time to order, here is a three-piece baby costume accessory set – a diaper, a giant pin, and a nice, big pacifier. If you need to make it yourself, you’ll be missing out on the extra-large pin and pacifier, but use the biggest safety pin you can find at the drug or dollar store or Walmart and choose the most outlandish pacifier you can find, or settle for a cute little binky. Then again, “extreme” accessories make for a lot of fun and a lot of conversation. Remember, your goal is to be the hit of the party. Babies love to be the center of attention!
Big Baby Costume Accessory KitThe huge pacifier is just what the baby ordered! You also get the big diaper and pin.
Buy Now Snuggle Up With a Baby Blanket
Choose a good-sized blanket to snuggle, or think “Linus” and drag it behind you when you walk. A fleece throw (you’ll find these in the bedding department of your local discount store) is a great size for an adult baby and can be used long after the costume party is over.
TIP: Hold your baby blanket tight and keep your thumb in your mouth to add character to the costume and help with your disguise.
Add One Very Large Bib
An adult size bib is a perfect accessory. If you’re shopping for a bib in the children’s department, just make sure the ties are long enough to fit around your neck.
Wear the bib over a simple t-shirt, white or any color you choose. Pink or blue, of course, are perfect colors for this component of your costume. Or choose a fun, childish print.
A bib is something else that can be used otherwise after Halloween. (Spaghetti, anyone?)
Dress the whole family as babies. What fun for a family costume to go as triplets, quads, quints or more!
Don’t Forget Baby’s Booties!
One of the easiest ways to make “booties” for your baby costume is to put on a plain white pair of tennis shoes then add a big pair of knitted slippers over top. Look for pink or blue slippers, or choose a crazy pattern, the more outlandish the better.
Remember, “extreme” is your friend when designing a winning costume. A big baby with extra-large “booties” is definitely extreme and will stand out at a costume party.
Baby Needs a Bonnet (to hide her identity)
A big bonnet meant for a pioneer costume (maybe next year!) or to use in the garden will work. Look for something with a big brim, which is a great way to hide your face, adding to the disguise.
Don’t have a baby bonnet that’s big enough? If you’re really in a DIY mood, check out this illustrated article showing how to make a bonnet from a simple straw hat. This one makes an awesome-looking bonnet from a cereal box and duct tape. Cover it with some gingham and you’re done! I’m not kidding; it’s a great project!
If you have time and a sewing machine, watch the video below, an excellent video tutorial showing how to make a prairie bonnet. Choose gingham or a colorful print to top off your baby costume in real style.
As with all do-it-yourself costumes, think outside the box, or in this case the baby bed, add some creativity and a little imagination to come up with a costume that’s totally unique.

Buy Now TIP: Our Secret for the Best Baby Costume
When you arrive at the costume party, sit down on the floor, put your thumb in your mouth, cuddle up your baby blanket and pacifier, and don’t say a word. Keep your face hidden behind your bonnet and stay in character as much as you can. Being down low will make it harder for people to identify you, which is really fun at a costume party. Of course if everyone ignores you, you can always cry or throw a nice temper tantrum!
POLL: What do you think of our dress-up idea for Halloween?
Do you think a baby costume for an adult is a good idea?
Yes! Love it!
Eh, it’s okay.
No way. An adult dressed as a baby looks too silly, even for Halloween.
